Cabinet gives nod to new telecom policy
Why is it in the news ?
- The Union Cabinet approved the new telecom policy, named as the National Digital Communications Policy (NDCP) 2018.
- The new policy aims to attract $100 billion investment and create 40 lakh jobs in the sector by 2022.

- The new policy has been made to address emerging technology areas like 5G, Internet of Things and machine to machine communication.
- Policy aims to boost sectoral contribution to 8% of GDP from 6% in 2017, besides backing the principles of net neutrality.
- The policy also envisages 50 Mbps of broadband connectivity to every citizen in five years.
- The telecom department’s (DoT) Telecom Commission will from now be called Digital Communication Commission.
- The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will be called Digital Communications Regulatory Authority of India.
- Under the new policy, the government plans to optimally price spectrum, review levies such as licence fees.
- The new policy aims to expand the IoT ecosystem to 5 billion connected devices.
- It aims to secure India’s communications infrastructure and establish a comprehensive data protection regime that safeguards privacy, autonomy and choice of individuals.
- It also calls for establishment of a National Digital Grid by creating a National Fibre Authority.
