EC sets month-long poll schedule for 5 States

Why is it in news?
  • The Election Commission  announced that the Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Telangana will be held from November 12 to December 7.
  • The results for all the five States will be declared on December 11.
  • The model code of conduct came into effect in four States —
  1. Chhattisgarh,
  2. Madhya Pradesh,
  3. Mizoram and
  4. Rajasthan — immediately.
  • The guidelines are already in place in Telangana, as directed by the Commission on September 27, following the premature dissolution of the Assembly.
What is MCC?
  • These are the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India for conduct of political parties and candidates during elections mainly with respect to speeches, polling day, polling booths, election manifestos, processions and general conduct.
  • To ensure free and fair elections.
  • The Model Code of Conduct comes into force immediately on announcement of the election schedule by the commission.
  • The Code remains in force till the end of the electoral process.
