
Snowfall damages Kashmir’s apple crop
Why is it in news?
- Heavy snowfall in the Kashmir valley where power supply, apple orchards and road connectivity were badly hit in the past 24 hours.
- Over 700 stranded passengers were evacuated to safer locations.
- According to the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCI), preliminary reports received from various fruit associations suggest losses to the tune of ₹500 crore.
Valley in darkness
- The Valley, including several hospitals, reeled in darkness through the night.
- Over 700 civilians stranded on the highways at Jawhar Tunnel and at Sonmarg were rescued in the night.
Apple Production
- Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. About 70% of total population of state depends directly or indirectly on agriculture.
- Apple and walnut are the major products of Jammu and Kashmir state, about 75% of apple production in India comes from Jammu and Kashmir.
- A number of research have been done in the field of apple cultivation, storage and preservation.
