
NASA collaborates with China on moon mission
Why is it in news?
- The space agencies of the U.S. and China are coordinating efforts on Moon exploration.
- NASA said as it navigates a strict legal framework aimed at preventing technology transfer to China.
Successful Moon missions till date
- Successful unmanned landings on moon:(1) 1966: USSR accomplished the first soft landings with Luna 9 probe.(2) The U.S. followed with five unmanned Surveyor soft landings.(3) 1970: Soviet Union achieved the first unmanned lunar soil sample return with the Luna 16 probe.(4) 2008: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) performed a controlled crash impact with its Moon Impact Probe (MIP).(5) Moon Impact Probe (MIP): The MIP was an ejected probe from the Indian Chandrayaan-1 lunar orbiter and performed remote sensing experiments during its descent to the lunar surface.(6) 2009: The Chinese lunar orbiter Chang'e 1 executed a controlled crash onto the surface of the Moon.(7) 2013: The rover mission Chang'e 3 soft-landed.(8) 2019: Its successor, Chang'e 4 softly landed.
- Manned landings on moon:(1) A total of twelve men have landed on the Moon.(2) This was accomplished with two US pilot-astronauts flying a Lunar Module on each of six NASA missions across a 41-month period from 1969 to 1972.
