Why is it in news?
- President Ramnath Kovind conferred the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian honour on former president Pranab Mukherjee, alongwith social activist Nanaji Deshmukh (posthumous), and Assamese musician Bhupen Hazarika (posthumous).
Important Civilian and Military Awards
Civilian Awards:
- Bharat Ratna:(1) It is the highest civilian award of the country.(2) Any person without distinction of race, occupation, position, or gender is eligible for this award.(3) It is awarded in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour.(4) On conferment of the award, the recipient receives a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a medallion.(5) It is not mandatory that this award should be given every year.
- Padma awards:(1) These awards have been announced every year on Republic Day.(2) Padma Awards, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri are given for exceptional and distinguished service in any field including service rendered by Government servants.(3) Padma Vibhushan for "exceptional and distinguished service". Padma Vibhushan is the second-highest civilian award in India.(4) Padma Bhushan for "distinguished service of a high order". Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in India .(5) Padma Shri is awarded for "distinguished service". Padma Shri is the fourth-highest civilian award in India.
Military Awards:
- Wartime gallantry awards:(1) Param Vir Chakra- Highest military award, equivalent to the Victoria Cross (which was replaced once India gained its independence).(2) Maha Vir Chakra- Maha Vir Chakra is the second highest military decoration in India and is awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea or in the air.(3) Vir Chakra - Third in precedence in the awards for wartime gallantry.
- Peacetime gallantry awards:(1) Ashok Chakra Award- An Indian military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield. It is the peacetime equivalent of the Param Vir Chakra.(2) Kirti Chakra- Second in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards.(3) Shaurya Chakra- Third in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards.
