MBBS exam: plea in HC questions bar on disabled
Why in news?
- The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought a response from the Centre and the Medical Council of India (MCI) on a petition challenging a notification which barred persons having more than 80% disability from taking admission to undergraduate medical education program.

what revised regulations prohibit?
- Prohibit those with locomotor disabilities above 80% from getting admitted to MBBS.
- It pronounces them ineligible.
- Same is true with those with blood disorders.
- Also debars students with chronic neurological conditions with a disability of over 80 per cent.
- This is in contempt of the Supreme Court directions in the Sachin v/s State of Haryana.
Certain examples contradicting with state’s decision:
- Several physicians work and operate despite having disabilities, with the help of aiding measures.
- Hemato-oncologist, Dr. Suresh Advani who was awarded the Padma Vibhushan is a living example of a wheelchair-user with disability of above 80 per cent.
