EC stresses objection to TDP’s choice of technical expert EFF Pioneer Award

Why in news?
  • The Election Commission expressed its objection to the TDP’s nomination of Hari Prasad Vemuru as a technical expert for discussing issues related to Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with the poll panel officials.

  • Reason for objection:
    (1) EC said Mr. Vemuru’s name was not in the list of delegates provided by the party when the delegation led by CM Chandrababu Naidu when he met the EC recently.
    (2) EC also stated that it was not comfortable in interacting with Mr. Vemuru, party could nominate other expert to interact with the officials.
  • TDP’s Response:
    (1) FIR of alleged theft of EVM was lodged against Mr. Vemuru in Mumbai on May 13, 2010, no charge sheet had been filed in the case even after nine years.
    (2) Mr. Vemuru was the first Indian to be honoured with EFF Pioneer Award-2010 by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (U.S.).
  • EFF Pioneer Award:
    (1) The EFF Pioneer Award is an annual prize by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) for people who have made significant contributions to the empowerment of individuals in using computers.
    (2) Hari Krishna Prasad Vemuru is the first and only Indian to be awarded with the Pioneer Award from Electronic Frontier Foundation.
    (3) He has conducted the first independent security review of voting machines used in India's polls.
  • Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF):
  • It is an international non-profit digital rights group based in San Francisco, California.
  • The foundation was formed in July 1990 to promote Internet civil liberties.
