  • Olive Ridley hatchlings began their new journey into the Bay of Bengal.

  • Olive Ridley turtles:
    (1) Having their origin in the Pacific and Indian oceans, the Olive Ridley turtles come to the shores of the Bay of Bengal only to lay their eggs between December and April every year.
    (2) Gahirmatha in Odisha is the preferred location for their nestling, many turtles stop by in the intermediate beaches.
    (3) Each female digs a sandpit, lays 90 to 120 eggs.
    (4) The turtles do not protect the eggs from predators such as dogs and jackals.
    (5) This makes the role of the Forest Department important.
  • Conservation locations:
    (1) Along the over 970-km coastline of the State, beaches such as Bhavanapadu, Kalingapatnam, Bheemunipatnam, Visakhapatnam, and Machilipatnam to Nellore are known to
    (2) be safe nesting grounds.
