Why is it in news?
- The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)’s National Institute of Immunohaematology, Mumbai, has developed a cost-effective Point-of-Care (POC) diagnostic test for severe Haemophilia A and Von Willebrand Disease (VWD).

Hemophilia A and Von Willebrand Disease (VWD):
- Hemophilia A:(1) It is also called factor VIII (FVIII) deficiency or classic hemophilia, is a genetic disorder caused by missing or defective factor VIII, a clotting protein.(2) Although it is passed down from parents to children, about 1/3 of cases are caused by a spontaneous mutation, a change in a gene.
- Von Willebrand Disease (VWD): It is a genetic disorder caused by missing or defective Von Willebrand factor (VWF), a clotting protein.
About diagnostic test:
- First in the world: This is the first in the world POC test for specific diagnosis of any common bleeding disorder.
- Cheaper than available conventional techniques: Working cost of these kits is less than Rs. 50 in comparison to existing conventional test for the diseases that costs around Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 1,0000.
- Quick results: The diagnosis can be done within 30 minutes of blood sample collection.
