
Project to curb menstrual waste
Why is it in the news?
- The Alappuzha municipality in Kerala has come up with a project to address the growing problem of menstrual waste.

- Disposal of sanitary napkins, majority of which are nonbiodegradable, has become a major challenge to the municipality.
- On an average, 0.43 tonne of sanitary napkin waste is being produced in the municipality.
- Hence, in a bid to get rid of sanitary napkins, the local body will distribute menstrual cups free of cost to women.
- Cups can be reused for a period of up to five years.
- By distributing 5,000 cups, the municipality will be preventing 39 lakh sanitary napkins from entering the earth.
- In the next phase, reusable pads made of clothe will be distributed.
- The local body is implementing the project titled ‘Thingal’ in association with the Hindustan Latex Limited.
- It is funded under the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of the Coal India Limited.
