GST Council meet

Why is it in the news?
  • The upcoming GST Council is set to meet on Friday.
  • The meeting could see rate reductions for electric vehicles (EVs) and the extension of the term of the National Anti-Profiteering Authority till November 2020.

Measures likely :
  • The GST Council will on Friday consider slashing GST rate on electric vehicles to 5 per cent, from 12 per cent currently.
  • A couple of anti-evasion steps such as integration of e-way bill with NHAI’s FASTag.
  • Asking states to make e-ticketing mandatory for all movie halls.
  • The Council will also consider tweaking GST rate on lottery. 
  • The Council would also deliberate on setting up a national bench of the Appellate Authority for Advance Ruling to reconcile the contradictory orders on similar issues passed by the Authority for Advance Ruling in different states.
GST Council:
  • Goods & Services Tax Council is a constitutional body for making recommendations to the Union and State Government on issues related to Goods and Service Tax.
  • The GST Council is chaired by the Union Finance Minister and other members are the Union State Minister of Revenue or Finance and Ministers in-charge of Finance or Taxation of all the States.
