Why in news
- Leader of Opposition (LOP)in Rajya Sabha Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad raised a question over non - disclosure of the annual ‘Crime in India’ last released in 2017.
- The data for the years of 2017 and 2018 are yet to be published
Why the delay
- All states have sent the requisite date for compilation of the 2017 report, except West Bengal and Bihar.
- Inconsistencies and errors in data provided by States and Union Territories has also caused delay in final publication of the report.
New Reporting Format
- In 2017-18, the NCRB, in after consultation with the States and other stakeholders, a new categories were added to the report.
- Before the amendments as many as 35% crimes remained in the “unclassified” category. The addition of new “crime heads” reduced the unclassified category to 15% of overall crime data.
- Some of the new categories included were crime against media persons, RTI and social activists, besides persons of Northeast States.
- It will also include crimes by saints, khap panchayats, security guards, proclaimed offenders, political party members, illegal immigrants; those committed in schools; those committed by government officials, besides cyber crimes against women and children.
- For the first time, crimes by Northeast insurgents, Left Wing Extremists and Terrorists will too be included.
