India urges Commonwealth to readmit Maldives as member

  • India has urged the Commonwealth to expedite readmission of the Maldives as a member country.

  • 19th Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting:
    (1) External Affairs Minister conveyed India’s stand at the 19 Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting in London.
    (2) The Minister called for fast-tracking of the process of readmission of the Maldives to the Commonwealth.
    (3) The support came weeks after Mr. Modi visited Male in his first overseas trip after his re-election.
  • Withdrawal of Maldives from commonwealth: The Maldives withdrew from the Commonwealth during the tenure of President Abdullah Yameen in 2016 after the Commonwealth expressed serious concern over the deteriorating human rights situation in the country.

    (1) It is a voluntary association of 53 independent and equal sovereign states.
    (2) Member countries are supported by a network of more than 80 intergovernmental, civil society, cultural and professional organisations.

    (1) It is home to 2.4 billion people and includes both advanced economies and developing countries.
    (2) Thirty-one of our members are small states, many of which are island nations.

  • Mission: To support member governments, and partner with the broader Commonwealth family and others, to improve the well-being of all Commonwealth citizens and to advance their shared interests globally. 
  • Commonwealth Charter: Its basis is shared values and principles which are inscribed in the Commonwealth Charter.
  • Last country to join it: Rwanda- joined in 2009.
