Writ petition seeking guidelines for identification of minorities.

Why in news
  • A writ petition filed in the SC seeking directions to the government on either to
(1) Frame guidelines for identification of minorities at the States level or
(2) To declare Hindus as Minority in States where they are a real minority.

  • The petition challenged a notification issued in October 1993 which declared Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Paris’s as ‘Minority’ community without conducting any study, research or homework.
About National Commission for Minorities
  • It is a statutory body set up under the National commission for Minorities Act1992.
  • The commission function under the Ministry of Minority Affairs
  • Composition of the Commission
(1) Chairperson
(2) Vice Chairperson and
(3) Five members
  • The commission looks into the complains of Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Zoroastrians (Paris’s) and Jains.
