
Special status to J&K ENDS
Why in news?
- Rajya Sabha has passed two special resolutions and a Bill for the creation of Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
- Only the Union Territory of Jammu &Kashmir will have a legislature but not Ladakh.
- The Bill was proposed by the Home Minister.

- Why the need to end the special status : The Home Minister stated in RS that it was because of the Special status to the state that
(1) Article 370 discriminatory based on of gender, class, caste, and place of origin.
(2) More than 41,000, people have been killed since 1988.
(3) It is an obstacle to development.
(4)Youth of the state are being misguided.
(5) Terrorism cannot end in the State until Article 370 or 35A continue.
- The provisions are temporary in nature and have to go in the larger interest of the people of the State.
What the Govt has to say
- The Govt assures that if the Union Territory model works well J&K will regain its statehood without requiring constitutional amendments.
- Resolution for Repeal of Article 370 would pass every legal scrutiny in the courts of law.
- Precautionary measurestaken in the J & K by Centers
(1) Suspension of telephone and Internet services.
(2) Former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti remain under arrest.
(3) Additional Central security personnel deployed.
Concerns raised by Opposition
- Disintegration of India if the current government continues to be in charge.
- If it can be done in J&K it could be replicated in other states also breaking them into Union Territories.
Outcome of the change
- It will allowed all citizens to buy property and vote in the State.
- It will bring development, tourism and industries to the State.
- Also extension of all provisions of the Constitution to the State.
