- Top priority:(1) Chandrima Shaha said that her top priority would be to promote science more “aggressively” among people.(2) She said that she would like to conduct more outreach in local languages and have scientists speak about their work, the process of science etc to wider audiences.(3) This is critical to address myth and misinformation. There is need to educate people from the bottom-up.
- Important points on quota system:(1) Women comprise less than 10% of the fellowships of India’s science academies but Ms. Shaha is against quotas for women.(2) The critical mass of good women candidates is still low. While there are several more young women scientists today who are good and deserving, we cannot dilute [academic and research] standards just to accommodate more women.(3) India has several opportunities for women scientists perhaps more than several countries. However, we need to do better at assessing these programmes and evaluating their effectiveness and execution.
Indian National Science Academy (INSA)
- It was established in January 1935. It was the outcome of joint endeavours of several organizations and individuals and the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) playing a leading role in this regard.
- The name of the National Institute of Sciences of India was changed to the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) in February 1970.
- Objectives:(1) Promotion of scientific knowledge in India including its practical application to problems of national welfare.(2) Coordination among Scientific Academies, Societies, Institutions, Government Scientific Departments and Services.(3) To act as a body of scientists of eminence for the promotion and safeguarding of the interests of scientists in India and to present internationally the scientific work done in the country.(4) To act through properly constituted National Committees for undertaking scientific work of national and international importance which the Academy may be called upon to perform by the public and by the Government.(5) To publish such proceedings, journals, memoirs and other publications as may be found desirable.
