Why is it in the news?
  • The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has started preliminary work towards the implementation of the Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) system on the Mumbai suburban network.

    • Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) system:
      (1) The CBTC is a state-of-the-art signalling system, which will improve the efficiency and safety of operations.
      (2) In a CBTC system, all trains within a railway network are connected and communicate with each other using radio frequencies.
      (3) The system moves away from traditional fixed signalling, where trains stop or slow down depending on the colour on the signal, and adjusts the speed of trains dynamically.
      (4) The location of each train is communicated to the train behind it to maintain a safe braking distance at all times.
      (5) The project aims to improve the frequency, thereby reducing overcrowding on trains.
      (6) At present, trains on an average run at a peak frequency of around 3.5 minutes, which will be brought down to around 2.5 minutes after the project is implemented.
