Why in news?
  • Nine Opposition parties staged a protest and adopted a resolution
More in news
  • Demands put forth in the resolution are
(1) immediate release of all public representatives of mainstream political parties and innocent citizens.
(2) immediate restoration of normalcy and communications
(3) Such as measure could be undertaken by
(4) Subsidising one litre packs to discourage the use of 500 ml packs,
(5) Offering a rebate to customers who return the plastic pouches for recycling,
(6) Reuse of pouches.
  • The milk industry is one of the largest users of single use plastics.
  • There is a growth in use of disposable pouches replacing milk vendors and vending machines.
  • Country’s biggest milk cooperative which generates about 2.8 crore plastic packets per day said buyback schemes are not economically viable.
  • Plastic Waste Management (PWM) & Extended Producer Responsibility Rules, 2018
(1) It requires plastic generators to recover and recycle part of the plastic packaging they generate.
