
A Multi – Ministerial Plan against SUP
Why in news?
- Union government to work on a multi-ministerial plan to discourage the use of Single Use Plastics (SUP).
- The scheme is likely to begin from October 2, Gandhi Jayanti.

(1) It will be the nodal Ministry for the scheme
(2) The Ministry is to ensure ban on SUPs and finalise the pending policy for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), especially on milk packets.
- Department of Industrial Promotion – to work towards using plastic as a fuel in cement factories.
- National Highway Authority of India (NHAI)to ensure
(1) Collection and transportation of plastic waste along Highways
(2) To use the collected plastic in road constructions.
(3) A study has shown roads constructed using water plastic are not only durable against extreme weather conditions but also cost effective.
- Railways Ministry–
(1) They are to organise shramdaans (voluntary work) on October 2 for collection of plastic waste at railway stations and on railway tracks.
(2) Run advertising radio spots on all trains.
- Urban local bodies
(1) To organise massive shramdaan on plastic collection
(2) The collected waste to be segregated into recyclable and non-recyclable categories.
- Gram panchayats - to ensure roads under the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), or rural roads programme, are built using plastic waste.
