A Study on traffickers

Why is it in news?
  • A study on profile of persons accused in trafficking in West Bengal and Andhra Pradeshhas revealed that one-third of them are women.

  • Finding of the study
(1) 50% of the accused in trafficking are from the age group of 25 to 45 years.
(2) Of the 429 people accused only in 30 were the accused family members, including from the extended family.
(3) Detailed inquiryhas revealed that the accused is not a relative but a neighbour or an acquaintance.
(4) Neighbours were the largest group of traffickers followed by unknown people.
(5) In many cases of trafficking, survivors wereunaware of victim’s compensation.
  • Impunity to traffickers - because of lack of legal support andprolonged trial to survivors.
  • National Crime Record Bureau for 2016 recorded 8,132 cases of human trafficking in the country, of which 3,579 cases (around 44%) were from West Bengal alone.
