Doctors urge against violence

Why in news?
  • The Supreme Court(SC)directed the Centre to respond to a plea to make violence against doctors, medical personnel & establishments a separate penal offence.

(1) Inaction of Police to prevent incidents of violence and protecting the medical community.
(2) Medical fraternity becoming demoralised by the increasing number of attacks.
(3) It is because of such incidents doctors are avoiding to serve in rural areas.

(1) Despite beingnotified in 19 States in the past 10 yearsthe Act has failed to address the issue.
(2) The petitioners have urged for thepunishment for committing violence against the medical fraternity should be Either three years to five years' imprisonment or a 
Fine of minimum Rs. 25,000 upto one lakh
