UNHRC asks India to end lockdown in J&K

Why is it in the news?
  • The UN Human Rights Council(UNHRC) urged India on Monday to end the lockdown in Kashmir and restore basic communications services. 
More in the news
    • UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet noted the situation in Kashmir and asked the Indian government to respect civil rights.
    • The UNHRC also point out the situation in Assam, where lakhs have been excluded from the National Register of Citizens.
    • It has appealed to India to ease the current lockdowns or curfews; to ensure people’s access to basic services; and that all due process rights are respected for those who have been detained.
    • It is important that the people of Kashmir are consulted and engaged in any decision-making processes that have an impact on their future.
    • About UNHRC:
(1) The Human Rights Council is the main inter-governmental body within the United Nations system responsible for addressing situations of human rights violations.
(2) The Council’s mandate is to promote “universal respect for the protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all.
(3) The UNHRC was established by the UN General Assembly on March 15, 2006 (by resolution A/RES/60/251) to replace the UN Commission on Human Rights.
(4) The headquarters of UNHRC is in Geneva, Switzerland.
