New model of waste collection and Making use of Multilayered Plastics (MLP)

  • The Multilayered plastic (MLP) waste, most commonly used in food packaging, is not being segregated and ends up in landfill.
(1) It’s not sold in the same way as high value plastics like polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
(2) The model calls for Door-to-door collection from residential and commercial establishments, like the newspaper collection, which provides value for collection as well as segregation.
(3) The idea aims to create a model that will have economic returns close to the cost of recycling,
  • About the MLP Waste
(1) MLP made out of two or three different polymers, which is essential to make packaging airtight and waterproof.
(2) This is a key disadvantage as the recycled granules are not of a single polymer, reducing their value.
(3) Moreover, due to its light weight, one needs large volumes to make recycling viable.
