Vayoshreshtha Samman

Why is it in the news?
  • The Vayoshreshtha Samman, an annual national award of the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, will be given away to 15 individuals and organisations by President.
  • The award distribution is one of the Ministry’s events to mark the International Day of Older Persons.

(1) A Madhya Pradesh municipality, which runs a daycare centre for senior citizens.
(2) An NGO in Kerala that has sensitised thousands to the need for taking care of elders.
(3) The State of Tamil Nadu, which has established maintenance tribunals in each sub-division.
  • About Vayoshreshtha Samman:
(1) It is conferred on eminent senior citizens and Institutions in recognition for their service to elderly persons, especially indigent senior citizens.
(2) The “Vayoshrestha Samman” was elevated to the level of national awards in 2013 under 13 categories.
(3) The recipients of the Sammans shall be declared every year on the 1st September and will be conferred on the 1st October on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons (IDOP).
