
Turkey defiant on Syria operation as U.S seeks ceasefire
Why in news?
- Turkey rebuffed international pressure to curb its military offensive against Kurdish militants in Syria as U.S. President Donald Trump dispatched U.S Vice President Mike Pence to Ankara to demand a ceasefire.

- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan rejected any negotiations, insisting that Kurdish forces should “lay down their arms... destroy all their traps and get out of the safe zone that have been designated”.
- The U.S.-led coalition said on Wednesday that its forces had left the Syrian cities of Tabqah and Raqqa as well as a Lafarge cement factory.
- Meanwhile, the Kremlin said it would host Mr. Erdogan for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to ensure the operation does not turn into all-out war between Turkey and Syria.
