TB cases down in India

Why is it in the news?
  • According to the WHO-2019 edition of the Global Tuberculosis (TB) Report, the tuberculosis incidence rate in India has decreased by almost 50,000 patients over the past one year.
  • The report provides a comprehensive and up-todate assessment of the TB epidemic and progress in the response at global, regional and country levels for India.
More about the Scheme
  • Report Data:
(1) India had 27.4 lakh TB patients which came down to 26.9 lakh in 2018.
(2) Incidence per 1,00,000 population has decreased from 204 in 2017 to 199 in 2018.
(3) Ten million people are suffering from tuberculosis globally. India accounts for around 27 per cent of these cases.
  • Tuberculosis is a contagious disease caused by bacteria and has been identified by the WHO as one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide.
  • According to experts, TB remains the top infectious killer in the world claiming over 4,000 lives a day.
  • The India TB-Report 2019 notes that India is closest ever to covering all TB cases through the online notification system (NIKSHAY).
  • About NIKSHAY:
(1) It is the web enabled patient management system for TB control under the Revised National Tuberculosis Programme (RNTCP).
(2) It is developed and maintained by the Central TB Division (CTD), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), and the WHO Country office for India.
(3) Objectives: To create database of all TB patients including Multi-Drug Resistant cases across the country and to use this database for monitoring and research purposes at all levels.
