FSSAI Report on Milk Safety

Why is it in the news
  • A study by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India showed that around one-tenth of processed milk samples have safety issues.

  • Findings of the Study:
(1) Over a third of the samples of those of major brands, failed to meet one quality standard or another.
(2) Both raw and processed samples were found non-compliant on account of low fat or low SNF (solid not fat) or both.
(3) Proportion of fat and solid non-fat in milk varies widely by species and depends on breed as well as quality of feed and fodder.
(4) Only 12 out of 6,432 samples of milk were adulterated to the extent that it made it unsafe for human consumption.
(5) Out of 12, six were containing hydrogen peroxide, three having detergents, two urea and one sample having neutralizers.
(6) Out of 12 adulterated samples, nine were in Telangana, two from Madhya Pradesh and one from Kerala.
