
Second round of Smart Cities and AMRUT likely in 2020
Why is it in the news ?
- The second round of the Smart Cities Mission and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) could be rolled out in 2020.
- Both the schemes are Centre’s flagship urban development schemes.

- About Smart City project:
(1) It was launched on 25 June 2015. Comes under the Ministry of housing and urban development.
(2) The objective is to promote sustainable and inclusive cities that provide core infrastructure.
(3) Some of the core infrastructure elements in a Smart City would include:
-Adequate water supply,
-Assured electricity supply,
-Sanitation, including solid waste management,
-Efficient urban mobility and public transport,
-Affordable housing, especially for the poor,
-Robust IT connectivity and digitalization,
-Good governance, especially e-Governance and citizen participation,
-Sustainable environment,
-Safety and security of citizens, particularly women, children and the elderly and health and education.
- About AMRUT:
(1) Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) is aimed at providing basic civic amenities like water supply, sewerage, urban transport, parks as to improve the quality of life for all especially the poor and the disadvantaged.
(2) The focus of the Mission is on infrastructure creation that has a direct link to provision of better services to the citizens.
(3) It comes under Ministry of housing and urban development.
