
Contract farming law in Tamil Nadu
Why is it in the news ?
- The Tamil Nadu Agricultural Produce and Livestock Contract Farming and Services (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2019 gets president's nod.
- Tamil Nadu has become the first State in the country to enact a law on contract farming.
- The TN Bill is based on Central government's model law.

- Purpose of the Bill:
(1) The Bill allows protection to farmers to carry out transaction on the rates arrived at on the date of entering into the contract.
(2) It puts in place a policy framework and institutional mechanism on agricultural produce and livestock contract farming.
(3) It is aimed at benefitting marginal farmers.
(4) It also address the issue of fragmentation of arable land.
- TN Contract Farming and Services (Promotion and Facilitation) Authority:
(1) It will ensure proper implementation of the Act.
(2) It will make suggestions to the State government for promotion and better performance of contract farming.
(3) It will make contract farming more transparent, easier and successful and shall have the powers of a civil court in specified areas.
- Banned Produce:
(1) Any produce, banned by the Centre or State government or the Indian Council of Agricultura lResearch, would not be covered under contract farming.
