Plea in SC cites rise in boat accidents

Why in news?
  • The Supreme Court on Monday sought a response from the Centre on the increasing number of boat accidents occurring in the inland water routes across the country.

  • Petition filed:
(1) Many unauthorised boats are plying in the rivers, especially in Andhra Pradesh, with little regard for the safety of people.
(2) Neither the Centre nor the States had done anything to strictly implement the laws on boat services.
(3) The immediate trigger for the petition was the boat accident in the Godavari  river in Andhra Pradesh on September 15
