SC questions Delhi’s odd­-even scheme

Why in news?
  • The Supreme Court on Monday questioned the “logic” behind the Delhi government’s odd­-even scheme, saying what is the point of banning cars with certain registered numbers to reduce pollution when “third­-rate” auto rickshaws and taxis ply the roads.

(1) Bench ordered the Delhi government to produce data and records of previous years, to show effectiveness of the scheme.
(2) It also asked “If people are hiring third­-rate vehicles and go the same distance, what is the objective achieved?
  • Factories adding to pollution:
(1) Justice Mishra then questioned about the “more than 5000 factories permitted which are adding to the pollution.”
(2) They are Permitted under the Master Plan said lawyer for the Delhi government
(3) Also these factories are non-­polluting ones, they are permissible.
  • Court also mentioned that
(1) energy consumers too have a role to pay in the rise in air pollution.
(2) Air­-conditioners often work at full blast in offices and homes. Conservation of energy starts at home.
(3) However, Increasing the efficiency of mass transport is often a better solution.  But the Indian psyche finds it belittling to use public transport.
