Govt. ends SPG protection for Sonia, Rahul, Priyanka

Why is it in news?
  • The Union government has decided to withdraw the Special Protection Group (SPG) cover for Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her children — Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra — and replace it with ‘Z plus’ security cover of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

  • Special Protection Group
(1) The Special Protection Group (SPG) is "an armed force of the Union for providing proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and former Prime Ministers of India and members of their immediate families wherever in the world they are.
(2) SPG was formed in 1985 after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as an executive body on the recommendation of Birbal Nath committee.
(3) Later SPG was made a statutory body by passing the Special Protection Group Act, 1988.
(4) It works under administrative control of Cabinet Secretariat and is headed by Inspector General rank officer from Indian Police Service.
