Why is it in the news?
- According to a report, the representation of women in the Indian police force continues to be poor, at 7.28% as on January 1, 2017.
- The force lacks gender sensitivity and fails to address the needs of women.

(1) Contributes to reinforcement of gender stereotypes.
(2) Intensifies biases against women within the police force.
- Short of benchmark: None of the States have been able to meet the 33% benchmark set by the Ministry of Home Aff
- Tamil Naduhaving the highest representation of women at 12.9% in 2016.
- Maharashtra ranked the lowest in having women police personnel with 7.3%
- Discrimination:
(1) Policewomen at higher ranks are more likely to report discrimination.
(2) Policewomen are more likely to perform in-house tasks, while policemen are more likely to undertake on the field jobs.
- Representation:
(1) There are vacancies in reserved posts for scheduled caste (SC), scheduled tribes (ST), other backward classes (OBC), and women in the police force across nearly all States.
