Onion Stock limits

Why is it in the news?
  • The Centre has further tightened stock limits for onions to prevent hoarding by traders as retail pric­es soar well above Rs.100 per kg.
More in the news
  • Limit:
(1) Retailers will not be allowed to stock more than five metric tonnes. Earlier, the li­mit was 10 metric tonnes.
(2) The stock limit for wholesalers has al­so been halved, from 50 metric tonnes to 25 metric tonnes.
  • For Domestic produce:
(1) These limits apply to only dom­estically grown onions.
(2) There is an exemption clause for the im­ported ones, whether stocked by wholesalers, retailers or dealers.
  •  The Centre has already banned onion exports and decided to import 1.2 lakh tonnes.
