SC, ST quota in Parliament extended

Why in news?
  • Parliament passed a Constitutional amendment giving a 10-year extension to reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the Lok Sabha and the State Assemblies and ending the provision for nomination of two Anglo-Indians.

  • Constitution (126th Amendment) Bill, 2019:
(1) Passed unanimously by the Rajya Sabha, 2 days after it was passed by the Lok Sabha.
(2) Extended Reservation for SCs & STs in the Lok Sabha & State Assemblies, which was due to end on Jan 25, 2020, for 10 years, the seventh such 10-year extension given since the Constitution was enacted in 1950.
(3) Ended the provision for nomination of Anglo-Indians.
