
Goa relieved after MoEF’s decision on Mahadayi project
Why in news?
- In a reprieve to Goa, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF) kept in abeyance its letter earlier written to Karnataka stating that its proposed Kalasa Banduri project on Mahadayi river does not need an environment clearance (EC).

- Kalasa Banduri project: aims to provide drinking water to 3 important districts of north Karnataka which go parched in summer due to acute water scarcity.
- Diversion of water:
(1) Project involves diverting water from Mahadayi river, the lifeline of Goa, into the Malaprabha river.
(2) Goa government had strongly objected to the MoEF’s Oct letter and demanded that it be either withdrawn or kept in abeyance.
- Malaprabha River:
(1) Tributary of the Krishna River (Joins at Kudalasangama in Bagalkot district) & flows through Karnataka.
(2) It rises in the Western Ghats(Sahyadri mountains) at an altitude of 792.4 m (2,600 ft) in the state's Belgaum district.
(3) Bennihalla, Hirehalla and Tuparihalla are its major tributaries.
- Mahadayi /Mandovi River:
(1) Mandovi & Zuari are the two primary rivers in the state of Goa.
(2) Mandovi joins with the Zuari at a common creek at Cabo Aguada, forming the Mormugao harbour.
(3) Panaji, and Old Goa(the former capital of Goa), are both situated on the left bank of the Mandovi.
(4) It originates from a cluster of 30 springs at Bhimgad in the Western Ghats in the Belagavi district of Karnataka.
(5) Waterfalls on Mandovi: Dudhsagar Falls (Goa) & Varapoha Falls (Karnataka).
