Kerala govt. puts on hold NPR updation

Why in news?
  • Kerala recently became the 2nd State after West Bengal to stay all activities associated with updation of National Population Register (NPR) “considering the appreh-ensions among the public that the NPR activities lead to the National Register of Citizens”.

  • Following the footsteps of West Bengal:
(1) Kerala government decided to put on hold the proceedings for updating NPR.
(2) The decision in the wake of apprehensions that the update would lead to the preparation of a National Register of Citizens (NRC).
  • Notification reissued
(1) Principal Secretary (General Administration Department) had republished a notification issued by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India on the updating of the NPR in connection with the 2021 Census.
