India welcomes Afghan results, cautious about challenges to Ghani-Saleh’s victory

Why is it in news?
  • India welcomed the preliminary results in the Afghanistan presidential election but stopped short of congratulating President Ashraf Ghani directly for winning a second term.

  • President Ashraf Ghani wins majority: According the Independent Election Commission (IEC) results announced on Sunday evening, Mr. Ghani had won a majority of 50.64% of the votes, with his closest rival and former chief executive Abdullah Abdullah getting 39.52% of the 1.9 million votes counted.
