Free WiFi to villages

Why is it in the news ?
  • According to the Telecom Minister, WiFi services being provided through BharatNet in villages across India will be free of charge till March 2020.
Concepts
  • More from the Minister:
(1) We have already connected 1.3 lakh gram panchayats through BharatNet optical fibre network.
(2) Our target is to take this to 2.5 lakh gram panchayats.
(3) To promote utilisation of BharatNet services, we will provide WiFi free in all villages connected through BharatNet till March 2020.
  • About Bharatnet:
(1) BharatNet project was launched to provide affordable broadband connectivity of 2 Mbps to 20 Mbps for all households.
(2) The project is being funded by Universal service Obligation Fund (USOF).
(3) USOF was set up for improving telecom services in rural and remote areas of the country.
  • Objective:
(1) To realise the vision of Digital India, in partnership with States and the private sector.
(2) To facilitate the delivery of e-governance, e-health, e-education, e-banking, Internet and other services to the rural India.
