MDL, L&T on submarine project list

Why is it in news?
  • The meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday cleared Mazgaon Docks Ltd. (MDL) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) as the Indian partners in the Navy’s tender for six advanced submarines under Project-75I worth over Rs. 45,000 crore.

  • Deals worth Rs 5000 crore: The DAC also approved deals worth Rs. 5,100 crore,which includes electronic warfare systems for the Army to be developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by Indian industry.
  • Project 75I
(1) The Project 75I-class submarine is a follow-on of the Project 75 Kalvari-class submarines for the Indian Navy.
(2) Under this project, the Indian Navy intends to acquire six diesel-electric submarines.
(3) These submarines will feature advanced air-independent propulsion systems to enable them to stay submerged for longer duration and substantially increase their operational range.
