Puducherry Assembly passes resolution against CAA

Why in news?
After Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan and West Bengal, the Puducherry Assembly recently adopted a resolution urging the Centre to repeal the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

  • Reasons for the Resolution:
(1) At a special session, Chief Minister of Puducherry moved the resolutions and said the CAA, along with the plan to prepare a pan-India National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR), would destroy India’s unity and secular character.

(2) ‘Dividing people’: CAA is “discriminatory and unconstitutional”, excluding Muslims from the purview of the Act.
