Cabinet clears Major Ports Authority Bill
Why in news?
- The Union Cabinet recently approved the Major Ports Authority Bill 2020, which will be introduced in the ongoing session of Parliament.
More in news
- Bill will replace existing regulations under Major Port Trust Act, 1963.
- It aims to provide more operational autonomy and flexibility to all the major ports in India, allowing them to take decisions faster at the port level.
- This would be done by constituting a Board of Major Port Authority for each major port, which will be vested with powers of administration, control, and management of such ports.
- Dispute resolution not in old Act: disputes with private companies and PPP operators had been cropping up, but the existing law has no provisions to deal with them.
- The new law would also help in improving infrastructure.
