Supreme Court bars sale, registration of BS IV vehicle

  • The Supreme Court on Monday slammed the brakes on the sale and registration of BS IV vehicles.
About BS Emission Standards
  • The court made clear that now no registration and sale of BS IV vehicles is permitted.
  • BS-VI emission standards dictate a decrease in sulphur content to as low as 10 parts per million (ppm), five times lesser than BS-IV standards that called for 50 ppm sulphur, the current fuel quality in use.
  • Bharat stage emission standards (BSES) are emission standards instituted by the Government of India to regulate the output of air pollutants from vehicles.
  • The standards, based on European regulations.
