Kerala shifts to private forecasters as unhappy with IMD

Why is it in News?
  • Kerala released funds to 3 private forecasting companies — Skymet Private Ltd, Earth Networks and IBM Weather Company

  • It aimed at more accurate predictions to use for improve extreme weather alert services in the State
  • State had been hit by devastating flood in 2019

(1) The IMD had promised to ready15 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) before the monsoon.
(2) Unfortunately no new AWS has come up and real time data streaming is minimal to nil
  • AWS measure windspeed, humidity, rainfall and relays the data to centralised systems that are used to provide weather forecasts.

(1) Kerala wants use to install AWS at specific locations which is not possible due to IMD predefined protocol
(2) There are three Doppler Weather Radars and already a strong forecast mechanism in the State
  • Skymet made app, called Kerala Rain, that issued 15-day forecasts and “real time monitoring” for 100 weather stations
