Emergency Procurement of Armed Forces

Why is it in news?
  • Defence Acquisition Council gave emergency power to armed forces to procure weapons systems up to cost of Rs. 300 crores on urgent basis.
Details:
  • This is second time armed forces have been given such power. First time it was given after Blakot air strike in February 2019.
  • This will shrink the procurement timelines and ensure placement of orders within six months and commencement of deliveries within one year.
About Defence Acquisition Council:
  • Objective: To ensure expeditious procurement of the approved requirements of the Armed Forces in terms of capabilities sought, and time frame prescribed, by optimally utilizing the allocated budgetary resources.
  • Chairman: Defence Minister.
