
LeT leader held ahead of FATF meet
Why is it in news?
- Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operations commander Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi was arrested in Pakistan by its Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) on charges of using terror funds.
Details:
- The arrest of Lakhvi came nearly five years after he was released on bail in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks case.
- It comes ahead of meetings of the global watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF),
- Which will consider Pakistan’s greylist status meant for countries under increased monitoring.
- Pakistan had arrested the LeT founder Hafiz Saeed in July 2019 to save itself from downgrading to the blacklist or “High Risk Jurisdictions”.

- The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is an inter-governmental body established in 1989 by G-7 countries.
- Objective: Combating money laundering, terrorist financing and other related threats to the integrity of the international financial system.
- It has 36 member countries and 2 regional organisations: European union and Gulf cooperation council.
- It’s secretariat is based in OECD headquarters in Paris.
