SC frowns on plea to ban Meesha
Why is in news?
"Banning of books chokes the free flow of ideas" the Supreme Court observed when a plea came up before it to delete portions from the Malayalam novel Meesha .
What SC observed?
- The portion sought to be deleted is a conversation between two characters perceived to be derogatory about women who visit temples.
- But the Bench led by Chief Justice of India was of the opinion that the petitioner was making much ado about nothing.
- “You are giving undue importance to this kind of stuff. In the age of the Internet, you are making this an issue. It is best forgotten,”
- The court said it cannot make a virtue of banning literary works.
- The incriminating excerpt was published in the Malayalam weekly Mathrubhumi .
- The petition contended that the publication has caused “public outburst and protests across the nation, especially in the State of Kerala.”
