Why is it in news?
  • The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in Hague has directed the United States to lift sanctions on Iran linked to humanitarian concerns, in a move welcomed by Tehran.
  • The United Nations' top court issued an interim order directing the United States to lift sanctions linked to humanitarian goods and civil aviation imposed against Iran.

  • International Court of Justice –
  1. Its is the primary judicial branch of United Nations and settles legal disputes and provides advisory opinions submitted to it by its member states.
  2. ICJ is a civil court.
  3. UNSC enforces its court’s rulings.
  4. ICJ is composed of 15 judges elected for 9 years term by the UNGA and UNSC.
  5. International Court of Justice is one of the most important guarantors of peace, security and co-operation among states.

Recent ruling by ICJ, awarded Bangladesh more than 9,700 square miles in the Bay of Bengal, ending a maritime dispute spanning more than three decades.
