Why in news
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the 4th National Tiger Estimation (Tiger census) witnessing a jump of more than three times since the last census of 2014.

  • How states have performed
(1) Madhya Pradesh saw the highest number at 526closely followed by Karnataka and Uttarakhand.
(2) All other States saw a positive increase except to Chhattisgarh and Mizoram which saw a decline in tiger population.
  • Tiger Reserves
(1) Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of tigers and also the best managed tiger reserve in the country. Chhattisgarh was the least performing State in reserve management.
(2) Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu registered the maximum improvement since 2014.
(3) Dampa reserve in Mizoram and Rajaji reserve in Uttarakhand were the least performerswith a score of 42.97% and 44.53% respectively.
  • About the Survey
(1) The survey is conducted once in 4 years making it 4th since 2006.
(2) The survey was conducted over a time period of 15 months by forest officials surveying vast stretches of forested habitat, installing thousands of camera traps and wildlife biologists ferreting through 35 million images.
(3) A score of 41% and above was marked as fair and those 75% and above rated very good.

(1) The reserve has season-wise biodiversity plan.
(2) For managing security they have flying squads and tactical patrolling for managing security.
(3) Officials held regular meetings with the local communities.
(4) Funds collected from tourism were used for conservation purposes.
