Why in news?
  • Assam Chief Minister suggested, challenging final National Register of Citizens (NRC) through legislative route.
  • As per the direction of Supreme Court final NRC is to be published on 31 Aug.

  • Wrongful inclusions
(a) In past both Center and State govt have moved to Supreme Court seeking re-verification of the documents.
(b)Reverification is to be conducted for 20% of the 3.29 crore applicants in areas bordering Bangladesh as they are suspectedof wrongful inclusions and exclusions.
(c) The request for reverification has been rejected by Supreme Court twice.
(d) Around 41 lakh people have been excluded from the draft lists published in July 2018 and June this year.
(f) Around 36 lakh have filed claims against their exclusion and objections have been filed against two lakh inclusions.
  • About NRC : first published in Assam in 1951, is being updated as per the court directions.
  • It is a list to segregate Indian citizens living in Assam from those who had illegally entered the State from Bangladesh after March 25, 1971.
